Location
Okaman is in Waseca County OKAMAN, a former village on the northeast shore of Lake Elysian, in section 1, Janesville, platted in May 1857, extended also north into the edge of Le Sueur County. This Dakota name has nearly the same meaning as Okabena in Jackson and Nobles Counties, each being from hokah, "a heron," having reference to these localities as nesting places of herons. A post office with the same name, transferred from Elysium, Le Sueur County, was in section 1 of Janesville, 1858-75. From: Upham, Warren. Minnesota Place Names: A Geographical Encyclopedia.
