Red Wing is in Goodhue County The Dakota name of this place was Rhemnicha or Khemnicha, applied by Nicollet's map to the present Hay Creek as Remnicha River. It means the Hill-Water-Wood place, formed by three Dakota words, Rhe, "a high hill or ridge," mini, "water," and chan, "wood," referring to the Barn Bluff and other high river bluffs and to the abundance of water and wood, which made it an ideal camp ground.
