These photographs by Benjamin Franklin Upton, are a view of the city of St. Paul in 1857. Upton stood on top of the courthouse and took a panorama of nine photos.
Alexander Ramsey arrived in 1849 to become the first governor of Minnesota Territory. Within a few years, he described it as "a city of thousands, in which commerce rears its spacious warehouses, religion its spired temples, a broad capitol its swelling dome, and luxury and comfort numerous ornamented and substantial abodes."
