The shotgun was reportedly used by John Other Day during the 1862 U.S. - Dakota War while escorting white settlers from the Yellow Medicine Agency to Hutchinson, Minnesota. The gun has a straight walnut stock with an iron butt plate and a replaced trigger guard. The bar locks, butt plate and butt plate tang have coarse foliate scroll engraving. The shotgun's Damascus barrels have shortened and a brass bead sight was added afterward. The underside of each barrel has provisional and standard-load proofs from Liege, Belgium.
