That Norwegian suggested that they look at the New Ulm site for starting a town

OM: Well, I wouldn’t remember that. He must have been a young man when he came, maybe twenty-two, twenty-three years old when he came from Germany to New York. But he didn’t like it there, so they went to Chicago, and from there they went to St. Paul with a group of men that they called the German Land Association. I remember Grandpa telling about it, where Peter Mack and the group of Henles and Meyers, and there were maybe a dozen men or so, left St. Paul and came up as far as LeSueur, Minnesota. That’s on the record someplace already, if I’m not mistaken. They looked over that site, didn’t like it, and went further south and got into the Swan Lake area. That’s where they met a Norwegian, according to the records that I read, and that Norwegian suggested that they look at the New Ulm site for starting a town. And that’s what they finally decided on, a good place to start the city. That would have been about 1854.
