Location
Mahtowa is in Carlton County MAHTOWA Township has a name formed from the Dakota mahto and the last syllable of the Ojibwe makwa, each meaning "a bear"; sometimes seen as Mah-to-wa. The village of Mahtowa, section 9, was settled in 1875 with a station of the Northern Pacific Railroad and a post office, established in 1898. From: Upham, Warren.
