Minnesota History Center, St. Paul, Explore how the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862 forever transformed the land the Dakota call Mni Sota Makoce into the State of Minnesota. Historian Mary Lethert Wingerd will discuss how before there was a place called Minnesota there was Mni Sota Makoce, the homelands of the Dakota Indians. Mary Lethert Wingerd is associate professor of history at St. Cloud State University in St. Cloud, Minnesota, and the 2012 winner of the first bi-annual Hognander Minnesota History Award for her book "North Country: The Making of Minnesota."
