Missionary Stephen R. Riggs wrote, “The war came sudden.  We were at a loss to know the reason.  Some causes were superficial and others were deep-rooted and had been long-working.”  Using primary sources, historian John LaBatte will discuss why 100-150 young Dakota men became so angry that they drew their people into a war with the whites.
